Sprayer Winterization Tips
Maintenance Monday: Sprayer Winterization Tips for Southern Alberta Farmers
Winter is coming fast across southern Alberta, and now’s the time to make sure your sprayer is ready for the cold. In this week’s Maintenance Monday, Shane from Hanlon Ag Centre walks through a few quick sprayer winterization tips to help you prevent costly freeze damage and keep your system running smoothly when spring arrives.
Why Sprayer Winterization Matters
Sprayers are one of the most important pieces of farm equipment, and they’re also one of the most vulnerable to cold weather. If water or chemical residue freezes inside lines, pumps, or nozzles, it can cause cracks, leaks, or costly repairs down the road. Taking a few minutes now to winterize your sprayer can save you time, money, and stress later on.
Quick Steps to Winterize Your Sprayer
- Flush the system: Clean out all chemical residue using water or a proper cleaning solution. This prevents corrosion and buildup.
- Drain all lines: Make sure every line, valve, and nozzle is completely drained. Even small pockets of liquid can freeze and cause damage.
- Add antifreeze: Run sprayer antifreeze through the system to protect your pump and plumbing over the winter months.
- Inspect for wear: While winterizing, check hoses, fittings, and filters for cracks or wear that may need repair before next season.
Extra Tips from Shane
Shane recommends labeling hoses or taking photos of your setup before disassembly, making it easier to reassemble everything in the spring. If possible, He also suggests storing your sprayer indoors if possible to avoid extreme temperature swings.
