How to Get Your Fendt Tractor Tires to Spin in Mud

Wet conditions can create challenges for farmers across Southern Alberta. Whether you’re dealing with spring runoff, recent rainfall, or soft spots in the field, getting equipment stuck is sometimes unavoidable.

In this Maintenance Monday episode, Shane from Hanlon Ag Centre shares a real-world troubleshooting situation that happened in the field when operators were trying to pull a stuck machine out of the mud using a Fendt tractor.

The tractor had plenty of horsepower, but it wouldn’t spin the tires or generate the wheel slip needed to pull the equipment free.

Fortunately, the solution was simple.

Why Won’t My Fendt Tractor Spin the Tires?

According to Shane, there were three settings preventing the tractor from generating enough wheel slip to recover the stuck machine:

  • The tractor was operating in Range 2 instead of Range 1.
  • Maximum Output Control was not set correctly.
  • The Turbo Clutch function was still engaged.

Let’s look at each adjustment individually.

Step 1: Make Sure the Tractor Is in Range 1

The first thing Shane noticed was that the tractor was operating in Range 2.

When attempting to pull a stuck implement or machine from muddy conditions, Fendt operators should verify that Range 1 is selected.

Range 1 provides the low-speed, high-torque performance needed for maximum pulling power. If the tractor remains in Range 2, it may not generate enough torque through the rear end to effectively spin the tires and recover the equipment.

Before attempting a recovery, check your dashboard and confirm that Range 1 is highlighted.

Step 2: Adjust Maximum Output Control to 30%

The next setting Shane recommends checking is found within the Engine and Transmission screen.

Locate the Maximum Output Control setting and switch it from Auto to Manual mode.

Once Manual mode is selected, move the slider to 30%.

This adjustment allows the tractor to deliver additional output when needed during demanding pulling situations.

On older Fendt tractors, this setting was referred to as Maximum Output Control. On newer models, the feature is typically configured differently, but operators still need to ensure the tractor is not limiting power output during a recovery operation.

Quick Setup:

  • Open the Engine and Transmission screen.
  • Change the setting from Auto to Manual.
  • Move the slider to 30%.

This adjustment can make a significant difference when trying to free stuck equipment.

Step 3: Disable the Turbo Clutch

The third setting Shane identified was the Turbo Clutch.

The Turbo Clutch is designed to provide a smooth, controlled start when pulling implements. It helps prevent abrupt engagement and reduces wheel spin during normal operation.

While that’s beneficial during regular field work, it can become a disadvantage when you’re intentionally trying to spin the tires to gain momentum in muddy conditions.

With the tractor running, locate the Turbo Clutch button on the terminal and disengage it.

Once disabled, the tractor will be able to transfer power more aggressively to the wheels, allowing additional wheel slip when attempting to recover stuck equipment.

How to Pull a Stuck Machine Out of the Mud with a Fendt Tractor

If you’re using your Fendt tractor to recover another machine, Shane recommends checking these three items before you begin:

  1. Confirm the tractor is in Range 1.
  2. Set Maximum Output Control to Manual and increase it to 30%.
  3. Disengage the Turbo Clutch.

These adjustments will help ensure the tractor can generate the wheel slip and torque needed to pull equipment out of muddy conditions.
