Why Extra Knives Aren’t Always the Answer
There’s a common misconception that simply adding more knives to your mixer will improve cutting. Shane explains that this isn’t always true. Adding extra knives often just moves the material around the tub faster rather than cutting it more efficiently. Instead, consider installing extended backers, which move the knives 3–4 inches forward and place them in a better position to cut the material as it comes down.
Using Moisture to Improve Cutting
If your feed mix is dry — like hay, straw, or green feed — adding some moisture can make a big difference. Moisture creates friction along the tub walls, slowing down the material just enough to improve cutting efficiency. The result is better processed feed and more palatable feed for your animals.
