Sprayer Tank & Boom Cleanout Tips Before Spray Season
Dust is flying and spray season is coming fast across southern Alberta. Before the acres start adding up, taking time to properly clean out your sprayer tank and booms can help improve application performance, reduce contamination risks, and prevent costly downtime in the field.
In this week’s Maintenance Monday episode, Shane shares several important sprayer maintenance tips to help get your equipment field-ready for the season ahead.
Why Proper Sprayer Clean out Matters
Proper sprayer clean-out is especially important when changing products. Residue left behind in the tank, booms, filters, or nozzles can contaminate the next product being applied. This can reduce effectiveness, create crop safety concerns, or lead to uneven application across the field.
A thorough rinse also helps protect sprayer components and keeps your system operating efficiently during busy spray windows.
What Should You Rinse a Sprayer With?
For most applications, clean water is the first step in rinsing out your sprayer system. Depending on the products previously used, additional tank cleaners or recommended rinse solutions may also be required according to the chemical manufacturer’s guidelines.
Running clean water through the tank, plumbing, and booms helps flush remaining product from the system before switching chemicals or beginning a new application.
Flush Boom End Caps to Remove Trapped Product
One area that often gets overlooked during sprayer maintenance is the boom end caps. Product can collect and settle at the ends of the boom lines, especially after sitting for a period of time.
Opening and flushing the end caps allows trapped chemical residue and debris to exit the system instead of circulating back through the booms. This simple step can help improve spray consistency and reduce contamination concerns.
Clean Filters Help Prevent Plugged Nozzles
Dirty filters are one of the most common causes of plugged spray nozzles. Before heading to the field, inspect and clean your sprayer filters thoroughly.
Keeping filters clean helps maintain proper spray pressure and ensures an even application pattern across the boom. It can also reduce unnecessary wear on the sprayer system and prevent interruptions during critical spray timing.
Safely Blow Out Spray Nozzles
If a nozzle becomes plugged, avoid using your mouth to clear it. Instead, wear proper gloves and use an air hose to safely blow out debris from the nozzle.
This helps reduce exposure to chemical residue while also preventing damage to the nozzle tip. Taking a few extra minutes to handle plugged nozzles safely is an important part of sprayer maintenance and operator safety.
Sprayer Maintenance Tips for Southern Alberta Farmers
Spray season in southern Alberta often means long days and tight weather windows. Completing a proper sprayer clean out before the season starts can help reduce downtime, improve application accuracy, and keep your operation running smoothly when conditions are right.
Whether you are switching products, preparing for your first pass, or finishing preseason inspections, routine sprayer maintenance is one of the simplest ways to protect performance in the field.
