Feed Wagon Maintenance Tips for Winter
Winter feeding season is just around the corner, and keeping your feed wagon in top shape can save you downtime when the temperatures drop. In this week’s Maintenance Monday, Shane from Hanlon Ag Centre shares simple but important feed wagon maintenance tips to help southern Alberta farmers get ready for the months ahead.
Start with Cleaning and a Visual Inspection
Before you dig into the mechanics, give your mixer wagon a good cleaning. Removing feed build-up makes it easier to spot cracks, leaks, or wear that might otherwise go unnoticed. Check the inside of the tub for signs of wear on the knives and replace them if they’re dull or uneven.
Inspect Axles, Wheels, and Scales
Take a close look at your axles and wheel bearings to make sure everything is tight and turning smoothly. A quick check on your scale system can save you from inaccurate feed weights down the road. Look for damaged wires or connectors, and make sure cables are routed properly to prevent pinching or corrosion.
Check Gearbox and Oil Levels
Pop the cover and check your gearbox for oil level and condition. If the oil looks milky or dirty, it’s time for a change. Regular gearbox maintenance is one of the easiest ways to extend the life of your feed wagon and avoid costly repairs later on.
Drive Shaft and U-Joints
Inspect the drive shaft for any visible wear, cracks, or damage. Grease the U-joints and make sure there’s no play in the shaft. A little time spent here helps prevent vibration and drive failure when you need your wagon most.
Magnets and Heavy Metal Pickup
Shane also recommends adding magnets to the screws in your mixer. This simple upgrade can improve heavy metal pickup and help keep harmful debris out of your feed — protecting both your livestock and your equipment.
Final Check: Test Everything Before Winter Feeding
Once all components are checked and serviced, do a quick test run to make sure everything’s running smoothly. Pay attention to any unusual noises or vibrations. Catching small issues now can prevent bigger problems when winter is in full swing.
