Microwave Moisture Sensors

New Microwave Moisture Sensors are Harvest Tec’s latest upgrade for big square balers. Their function is to increase Relative Feed Value by delivering highly accurate crop information and moisture data to the operator. Two models of sensors are available- one for use with a preservative kit and the other without.

For Use With Preservative Applicators

770MWM Moisture Sensors

The 770MWM Moisture Sensor is used in conjunction with the Hayboss Preservative Applicator. Its function is to deliver highly accurate crop information to the operator and improve the effectiveness of preservative application.

The sensors attach to the compression chamber of a big square baler and scan the leaves as they enter the chamber.

As the sensors scan the entire width of the chamber, it gives the operator an accuracy reading of +/- 1 point of the actual crop moisture. Because of the scanner’s proximity to the preservative applicator’s spray shield, it reduces lag time between reading and application.

The star wheel sensors on the preservative applicator will continue to work, and the operator will have the ability to select which sensor they prefer to use.

The 770MWM Moisture Sensor can be installed on any new 700 Hayboss Applicator system and also on some previous models as well.

For Use Without Applicator OR For Use With Staheli West Dew Point Steamer:

77E Economy Moisture Sensors

For balers without preservative applicators, the 77E Economy Moisture Tester is an option. These sensors attach to the back of the bale chamber and read the width of the bale after each stuffer stroke. The sensor detects moisture levels form 6 to 70 per cent and provides the operator with highly accurate readings of the crop conditions.

For Both Sensor Models:

For both models, readings can be easily viewed through ISO displays, or with a tablet, depending on the operator’s preference. When using ISOBUS, information is communicated instantaneously so the operator can quickly make adjustments when necessary.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How accurate are the Hayboss microwave moisture sensors?

The 770MWM microwave moisture sensor is designed to provide highly accurate crop moisture readings within +/- 1 moisture point of actual crop moisture. The sensors scan the full width of the bale chamber, helping Southern Alberta hay producers monitor changing crop conditions more precisely during baling.

Can microwave moisture sensors work with my existing Hayboss applicator?

Yes. The 770MWM moisture sensor can be installed on current 700 Series Hayboss applicator systems and some previous models as well. Hanlon Ag Centre can help determine compatibility with your baler and existing preservative applicator setup.

What is the benefit of microwave moisture sensing compared to standard sensors?

Microwave sensors scan crop material earlier in the bale formation process and closer to the preservative spray location. This helps reduce lag time between moisture reading and preservative application, improving application responsiveness during variable hay conditions common across Southern Alberta.

Can these moisture sensors be used without a preservative applicator?

Yes. The 77E Economy Moisture Sensor is designed for balers without preservative applicators and can also work alongside Staheli West Dew Point Steamers. The system reads moisture levels from 6% to 70% and provides operators with real-time crop moisture information.

How are moisture readings displayed to the operator?

Moisture readings can be viewed through compatible ISOBUS displays or on a tablet, depending on operator preference and baler setup. ISOBUS communication allows information to update quickly so operators can make in-field adjustments during baling.
